Choppers In Wales
Choppers speak a universal language, and while the U.S. might have written In the first chapters, that language is now shared across the globe. Even in the heart of south Wales, where, for the past few years, some of the best choppers from the UK and beyond gather annually to celebrate their shared passion. The Hook Up Chopper Show has earned its place as the premier chopper event in this part of the world, and tickets are known to sell out within hours of release. As soon as the date is announced on social media, fans across the UK and Europe set reminders to snag their spot at this must-attend event.
As the sale time neared, I, like many others, was glued to my screen, refreshing the page, fingers crossed for a ticket. Sure enough, the site crashed due to the overwhelming traffic, but after a few tense moments, I managed to secure my spot.

Vintage Chopper Lovers
Why all the excitement? For me, and for many others, The Hook Up is an unmissable event for vintage chopper lovers. It’s the only place this side of the Atlantic where you’ll find such an impressive gathering of cool, classic chops. Yes, there’s great food, live music, boxing matches (yes, boxing!), trade stalls, and a vibrant social scene, but at its core, this event is all about the bikes and the stories that come with them.
The magic of the show lies in the camaraderie. It’s a place to meet old friends, make new ones, and exchange tales of roadside repairs. These aren’t just any bikes; many are 50 or 60 years old, ridden by enthusiasts who know their machines inside out. They don’t rely on breakdown services when something shakes loose – which happens often with these rigid, kickstart bikes. Instead, they carry toolkits and spare parts, always ready for some roadside maintenance. And if things get more serious, there’s always enough expertise and support at the show to get you back on the road. A backup vehicle doesn’t hurt, either.
All About The Bikes
Most of the downtime at the event is spent tinkering with bikes, whether fixing problems that arose on the ride over or just tweaking things for fun. This hands- on approach sets The Hook Up apart from other bike events. At rallies for modern bikes, people park their rides, do rally stuff, and head home without a second thought. But here, it’s all about the bikes, just like it was in the old days, which gives the event a nostalgic, authentic vibe that’s refreshing in today’s world.
Now, the weather forecast for the weekend predicted sunshine, something you can take with a pinch of salt as it usually rains sometime during the proceedings, but good to its word, the sun stayed for the whole weekend. Hardcore chopper fans came from near and far, determined to have a good time.

The Ride Out
This meant that the planned ‘ride out’ took place more or less as planned. The start time is more of a guide as some of these old bikes aren’t the easiest to start and require a bit of persuasion. Anyway, off they went, cruising through the stunning roads and landscapes of Wales and a great time was had by all.
Especially our American friends on their first visit to Wales. Meanwhile, the show continued, with groups gathering and chilling out, the vendor village bustling, and the food and drink stands doing brisk business. Inside the tattoo tent, the guys and gals were hard at work, adding to the chilled and friendly atmosphere of the event.
Boxing Time
Later in the day, the call went out for volunteers for the boxing match, a Hook Up tradition. With oversized boxing gloves, the participants, all dressed up, even one guy in a wedding dress, knocked 10 bales out of each other under the ever- watchful referee, James, the event organiser. A hilarious three-round fight for each pair entertained the huge crowd.
Watching big, tattooed bikers pillow fighting might not sound rock ‘n’ roll, but the crowd loved it. It was one of those “you had to be there” moments that’ll be talked about for years to come.

Another Successful Hook Up
As night fell, the bands took the stage, and the awards ceremony for the best bike kicked off. The winning trophy? A colossal monster of a thing – good luck strapping that to your bike! Other prizes were handed out, though I missed most of it, having somehow gotten stuck in the bar. The night rolled on with live music, a raffle offering chopper-related prizes, and the party which continued into the early hours.
By Sunday morning, the sun was shining and the sound of bikes firing up filled the air as everyone started their journey home. This year’s Hook Up drew a number of American attendees, proving that word of the event is spreading across the pond. A huge shout-out to James and the team for organising yet another unforgettable weekend.
So did I enjoy The Hook Up Chopper Show? Absolutely. Will I be there next year? You bet. Will I ever put a kickstart on my bike again? Not a chance – I’ll leave that to the younger crowd…
