The Early Years

Bettmann would buy bicycles from William Andrews, a contract engineer in Birmingham, and then sell them under his Bettmann names. British craftsmanship was highly sort after and Bettmann had high hopes for his sought sales in Europe, however sales weren’t quite as good as expected as the name wasn’t immediately recognised as being English. To counter this in 1886 Bettmann renamed the company The Triumph Cycle Company as the word Triumph was easily understood in in most languages.
